Historical Background

Thakur Jagdev Chand Memorial Govt. Degree College is located at Sujanpur-Tihra in Hamirpur District, a place of historical importance. Sujanpur bears its name from Sajjanpur, which means the town of honest and gentle people. At one time it was the capital of a flourishing kingdom on the bank of the river Beas, ruled by famous Maharaja Sansar Chand of the Katoch dynasty. Excellence poured forth from all the sides during his reign. In sculptor and architecture, the designers fused North Indian architectural tradition with the grand Mughal style. The world famous Kangra miniature art blossomed in Sujanpur. The Narbadeshwra temple is a tribute to the Mughal Rajput architecture of the eighteenth century, and it can be seen as the communal synthesis of Hindu yoga and Islamic Puritanism where the roof of the temple simultaneously represents the lotus and dome shapes, whereas the Murli Manohar temple has distinct elements of Pagoda architecture of Tibet and China. The walls of this temple have given refuge to some of the finest frescoes of the famous Pahari School of painting. Palaces, courts and temples built by Maharaja Sansar Chand Katoch still exist in Tira though have been destroyed by the passage of time and earthquakes etc. One can see many of the ruins here and can conceptualize how beautiful they must have been. Topographically and as if in a blessing, just like the famous Prayag of Allahbad, Sujanpur boasts of a Triveni , right between Himalayas and the Narbadeshwara temple. Triveni, or the confluence of three rivers, contains the Ganga, the Yamuna and the invisible Saraswati at Allahabad whereas on a lesser and even smaller scale, the tributaries Neugal and Saur, coalesce into Beas to make it a  divine spot. In the heart of the town stands the unmatched meadow, popularly called as the Chaugan, Chaugan is also home to a fortnight long extravaganza known as the ‘International Holy Fair’ to all Himachalis.
